History Curriculum Statement

The aim of history teaching at Burnley Brow is to engage and stimulate the children’s interest and understanding about the life of people who lived in the past, both in Britain and in the wider world.

We teach children a sense of chronology, and through this they develop an understanding of the growth of multicultural Britain. We tailor our history curriculum to our children’s needs and interests, drawing links between their own experiences and those of people in the past. Thus they learn to understand and appreciate their own place in British society and, by considering how people lived in the past, they are better able to make their own life choices today.

In our school, history makes a significant contribution to SMSC education; for example through focusing on key people who have fought for equality over the ages. We teach children to understand how events in the past have influenced our lives today; we also teach them to investigate these past events and, by so doing, to develop the skills of enquiry, analysis, interpretation and problem-solving.
